Corpus Delecti was the band the members of Anwyl were in before they formed Anwyl. This band formed in Wichita back in 1991 and released two demos before they broke up in 1997. After that, most of the members moved to Hutchinson and formed Anwyl. I was only able to find Blasphemy Embodiment, so let's see how good it sounds.
The production is a lot better than I expected it to be. I thought it would be a muffled mess, but I can hear everything quite well. As for the music, it sounds quite similar to early Cannibal Corpse. The growls are deep and grisly and sound quite similar to Chris Barnes's performance on Butchered at Birth. The drums are performed by a guy known only as Séance Aggressor, and as far as I know, this was the only thing he performed on. He plays the drums really well, though. The blast beats are simple and hard-hitting and he utilizes a great deal of double bass. He also plays some great fills when the time is right. The bass mainly sticks to following the guitars, so it can't be heard all that well, but there are moments when it does show up and pulls some awesome moves.
Best of all are the guitars, which are performed by Blaspheroth. When he went off to form Anwyl, he would switch to playing bass, but he's a pretty awesome guitarist on this demo. The riffs he plays back a great deal of dark groove that again reminds me of early Cannibal Corpse. They're rather simple and pretty infectious. He tops off his performance with some wild wailing solos that also give gruesome praise to Cannibal Corpse. I love 'em.
I had my doubts about this demo, but it turned out to be pretty awesome. Every part of the performance is fantastic, from the drums to the vocals to the guitars. It's a shame this band died out so quickly. If they had stuck around for a bit longer. That way, Kansas would have another metal band to be proud of. Seriously, the metal scene in this state is a wasteland. We're desperate for anything.
