Discography Slog: Gaffed

The oddly-named Gaffed was a death metal band from the oddly-named town of Brick, New Jersey. They only released two demos before splitting up. Today, we shall cover their first demo, A Meal Of Gore.

The production is kind of muddy, but not terrible. I can still hear everything just fine. The instrumentation maybe unoriginal, but it's still decent. It sort of sounds like proto-brutal death metal. The drums mainly stick to mid-paced rhythms that feature quite a bit of double bass. They also play a few fills on occasion.

The vocals consist of a deep, guttural growl that sounds quite similar to Cannibal Corpse. They sound uninspired, but they're not atrocious by any means. Speaking of Cannibal Corpse, the guitars also remind me of Cannibal Corpse. They play a lot of the same chugging riffs and even their solos sound like them.

Overall, while these guys aren't very original, they're still pretty good musicians.

The only other demo Gaffed ever released was It Hurts To Be Dead. I question the truth of that statement, but whatever. Let's just get to the music.

I can see that the production has improved. The music is still the same, although the instrumentation has noticeably improved. The drums are able to pull off a lot more tricks, the cymbals are more prominent, there are a lot more blast beats and many more fills.

The vocals still sound like Chris Barnes, the only difference being that they no longer sound so muffled. The guitars, however, sound less like Cannibal Corpse and more like early brutal death metal. They utilize a lot of groove-laden riffs and fast, sinister-sounding riffs. They also still play a lot of wild solos.

This demo is way better than the first one. However, Gaffed still isn't the kind of band I would listen to on a daily basis.
