Demons Damn – Retaliation

I remember listening to Demons Damn on ReverbNation sometime ago. They were pretty good. I also learned that they released a full-length debut recently, but I couldn't find it. Luckily, someone managed to buy it and upload it, so let's dive in, shall we?

The production is much better than it was on the songs they had up on ReverbNation. It no longer sounds so muffled and I can hear everything really well. The drums play lots of rapid blast beats and double bass, as well as plenty of fills to keep things interesting. However, I wish the snare didn't sound like a loud thud. This snare sound become especially annoying during the blast beats. Then again, the snare in most other Indonesian brutal death metal bands sounds like this, and since the drums are played really well, I'm willing to let this slide.

The vocals consist of a deep, hoarse, incomprehensible growl that sounds similar to early Cryptopsy. Personally, I'm not a big fan of this type of growl. I would have preferred a growl similar to Suffocation, but to each his own. What really amazed me about this album were the guitars. The Indonesian brutal death metal scene is well-known for their awesome guitarists, and this album is no exception. Instead of taking the easy way out by just throwing in a bunch of slam riffs, they decided to put some effort into their music by writing up riffs that lean more on the technical side. They might not be as complex as those played by the likes of Orestes or Killharmonic, but they're still excellent in their own right, especially those moments when they exhibit a bit of melody. And of course, they make sure to include a few

In conclusion, though it has its flaws, this album is a pretty decent first effort. I especially love the technical skills of the guitars. It would be a mistake to write these guys off immediately, as they are still in their infancy. If you give them time to grow and hone their craft, then they might one day make something truly amazing.
