Discography Slog: Infestation (US, MS)

There are lots of bands called Infestation. There are four Infestations in America alone. This on in particular comes from Massachuchu- er, I mean, Massachusetts. They formed in 1991, released two demos, then broke up sometime in the mid-90s. Today we shall look at their first demo, Visions Of Repulsion.

The production is pretty raw, but it's not terrible by any means. I've definitely heard worse. The instrumentation is still good, though. The drums like to play lots of simple and frantic blast beats, but they also like to use plenty of double bass and throw in some technical flair to keep things interesting. The growls are low and vicious. Their sound sort of reminds me of David Vincent back when he was good.

Despite the raw production, the guitars come through really well. They also play some sick riffs while they're at it, especially on songs like “Upon Deaf Ears”. They mainly stick to a moderate pace and lace their performance with plenty of groove. On top of all that, they make sure to throw in a few solos that sound like they're eviscerating the fretboard, especially that solo on “Vial Of Denial”.

Two years after releasing Visions Of Repulsion, Infestation released their only other demo, Conceived. Let's see how it holds up.

The production hasn't really improved much. It's still muffled, but I can still hear everything quite well. The music is what really matters to me, and it's still just as good as it was on the last album. The drums utilize more double bass and their patterns are more complex overall. The vocals still sound the same. He continues to worship David Vincent. I guess you don't need to fix what isn't broken.

The guitars also sound more or less the same. They're laced with plenty of groove and like to keep to a moderate pace. However, there are times when they play slowly and start to sound more like doom/death. The songs on this demo are much longer than they were on the last album, but luckily, these guys have a knack for great songwriting, so even if the songs are long, they still manage to make them interesting.

Overall, Infestation is pretty good. I especially love their groove-laced riffs and David Vincent growls. If you're lucky enough to find either of these demos, be sure to pick them up. Or you can be like me and just pirate them. Either way works.
