Fosa Comun - Blasfema Iniciación

Fosa Comun was one of Peru's first death metal bands. They were also incredibly short-lived. They formed in 1991 and released only one demo in 1993 before splitting up. Since I'm a sucker for obscure metal from unlikely places on the map, I decided to check this out. Unfortunately, it's not very good. Not very good at all.

To their credit, the production was handled very well. I can hear the instruments quite clearly. It isn't a muffled, unlistenable mess akin to Slaughter of Angels. However, the instrumentation is quite bad. The growls are pretty weak. He sounds like a cheap Chris Barnes ripoff. There's no force behind his delivery at all, especially when it comes to the screams. The screams are supposed to be chilling, but they end up being cringe-inducing instead.

The guitars only bother to play the simplest of riffs, just mindlessly chugging along without a care in the world. These boring, uninspired riffs are bad enough on their own, but they're mad even worse by the fact that the distortion sounds like a fart. I really hate distortion like that. It makes even the darkest death metal sound laughable. You want to know what's even more laughable? The solos. He tries to sound epic, but he makes countless mistakes, as though the guy was trying to perform them while drunk.

The only member of the band who seems to give a shit is the drummer. He mainly sticks to simple rhythms, but he plays a lot of fills that sound quite similar to Black Sabbath. Unfortunately for him, that's not enough to save this album. Overall, Blasfemia Iniciacion is pretty bad, but it's nowhere near as bad as some other obscure death metal albums I've listened to.
