Mors Atra Crucis – I

Mors Atra Crucis is a dark and mysterious black metal band consisting of two men from England and Portugal. The drummer, FG, is a member of the Portuguese black metal band Satanize. The other member, GP, is a member of a whole bunch of bands, the most notable ones being Arch Toll, Vanyar, and White Medal. They released their first demo earlier this year and I'm eager to listen to it.

The production is as foggy as an old graveyard, and the guitars are both heavily distorted and have a cavernous tone to them. The drums often alternate between slow, doom-like rhythms to rapid blast beats. FG makes sure to implement a lot of intricate cymbal work that help to spice up the performance. There are also these times such as on “Pestilence” where he performs simple punk rhythms. Since GP plays in a lot of blackened punk bands, this isn't surprising.

The vocals consist of a rasping growl that is cloaked in reverb. It sort of reminds me of Leviathan. The guitars are fantastic. As I said before, they have this cavernous tone to them which helps to give the music a dark and foreboding atmosphere. The riffs range from the sinister and slithering (“No Feeling”) to the energetic and somewhat infectious (“Pestilence”). Some of the fast tremolo riffs, such as those on “Plague”, remind me of Panopticon.

This was a sweet demo. I love the dark atmosphere these guys create and I love the riffs. You should definitely listen to this if you're a fan of obscure, lo-fi black metal.
