Vaalt – Demo MMXIII

Vaalt are a grisly dark doom/death band from the nice, sunny city of Calgary, Canada, and they released their first demo just this year. They first caught my attention with their cover art. It looks so old school. I'm glad it had that cool cover art, because without it, I would have missed out on some great music.

The first thing I love is the production. It sounds so deliciously dark and raw. It sounds like they recorded it in a mausoleum. The drums play slow and simple beats like most other doom/death bands (although they do play the occasional blast beat), but the raw production gives their performance an extra charm it would not have otherwise had. The growls are deep and hoarse. He seriously sounds like the reanimated dead.

I especially love the guitars. They have a tone lifted straight from the early 90s and they plod along like a funeral dirge. However, there are times when they'll play these morose acoustic guitars that offer a nice change of pace. They also like to play some fast tremolo riffs on occasion that help keep the music from getting repetitive.

Although this demo was really short, I really enjoyed it. It just oozes old school. I can't wait to see what they'll make in the future.
