Serpent Seed is a mysterious blackened punk band (I sure have been seeing a lot of those recently) formed by an anonymous individual on an unknown date. Their first demo, which is a self-titled affair, was released on Fallow Field, which has a notorious reputation for releasing a lot of noisy black metal. With this in mind, I have a feeling we'll be expecting more of the same on this demo.
Yep, I was right. The distortion makes me feel like I'm getting raped in the ears by an elephant whose dick is wrapped in razor blades and barbed wire. Despite the off-putting production, the music is still great. The drums alternate between fast and violent blast beats and stripped-down, minimalistic punk rhythms. It feels like Bone Awl except, you know, good.
The screams the guy uses sound both agonized and maniacal, like a cannibalistic meth addict who just stabbed himself in the foot with a whaling spear. They also have this strange reverb that sounds cavernous and enigmatic. As I said before, the distortion on the guitars is almost painful to behold, but at least it's nowhere near as distorted as Black Beasts. The riffs range from the simple mid-paced affairs to fast tremolo assaults. Despite the massive amounts of distortion, the riffs still manage to be pretty sweet and well-crafted.
This demo is obviously not for everyone, but if you manage to get past the terrifying levels of distortion, then you'll be in for some excellent blackened punk.
