Serpent Crest – And Whose Ashes Still Glow

I couldn't find much information about these guys. All I know is that they're a raw black metal band from America and this is their first demo. They also released a full-length, but I can't find that anywhere.

The first song isn't metal at all. Instead, it consists of lo-fi clean guitars that play these solemn notes as this guy sings in a very strange manner far off in the background. It felt so bizarre and out of place to me. It sounded more like something you'd expect a depressive black metal band like Gris or Sombres Forets to play. Oh well, at least the clean guitars are nice.

The black metal itself is even stranger. In stark contrast to Serpent Seed whose distortion was unimaginably abrasive, the distortion on this demo is unimaginably cloudy. I can't figure out what's going on until I crank my volume way high. The drums are so hard to hear under the cloudy production that at first I doubted they existed at all, but they do exist. They mainly consist of minimalistic blast beats. The cymbals are the most prominent part of the kit, and their clattering helps to give this demo a more dissonant, otherworldly quality.

The vocals consist of your standard rasp, but it's shrouded in a massive amount of reverb. For music like this, I expected him to sound more like Xasthur, but this is fine too. The most prominent part of this demo are the guitars. They mainly play simple tremolo riffs, but they also play these otherworldly riffs that exude a powerful atmosphere. It sounds almost beautiful in a way, like a fair-haired siren in a sea of fog. Boy, that simile sounded corny, but you get my point.

Normally, I'd write off a demo like this as unlistenable shit, but it has a certain charm to it that I can't seem to resist. It's definitely not the worst thing I've listened to. Remember Cathedrale de Glace? If you're a fan of really obscure, lo-fi stuff, then you might want to give this a try.
