Corrupt Leaders is a brand new grindcore band from Canada that released their first EP near the end of June. Personally, I have a problem with the name, as it implies that there are certain leaders who aren't corrupt. If you ask me, all leaders are corrupt. We don't need to be led around by someone else. We are perfectly capable of leading our own lives. But I seriously need to stop going on unrelated tangents and start looking at the music.
Simply put, the music Corrupt Leaders creates is really heavy and super aggressive. The drums offer up a plethora of straightforward blast beats and hardcore-influenced mid-paced rhythms. The snare has a great deal of impact, and I especially enjoy the excellent cymbal work. It gives the music an extra layer of calamity. The bass may only follow the guitars, but they're really thick, so they give the music a lot more muscle.
The vocals consist of a raspy scream that is firmly rooted in hardcore. Some people may not like this vocal style, but I think it fits well. The guitars are still excellent, though. They play a lot of fast, simple, chunky riffs that just tear shit up. They also play a few mid-paced riffs that provide a great deal of groove. Needless to say, they play grindcore really well, but I also liked this one part on the song “Backward to Death” that features slow, jazzy clean guitars and the chirping of birds. I felt that was a pretty nice change of pace.
Overall, this is some pretty nice grindcore that features a touch of hardcore, great drums, and crunchy guitars. This EP is available as a name-your-price download on their official Bandcamp page, so now's a great time to go get it.
