Daggra – Daggra

Daggra is a pretty new grindcore band that formed earlier this year and released their first demo near the end of June. It's a self-titled affair that bears seven songs that last a mere seven minutes, but they're a great seven minutes, I tell you what.

The drums play your standard blast beats and d-beats and whatnot, but they also play a great deal of fills, much more so than most other grindcore bands. This helps to make the music feel much more hectic. I also appreciate how prominent the cymbals are, which further enhance the hectic environment of this album.

The vocals consist of both a raspy growl and a frantic scream. They're both pretty standard, but they're both performed really well. The guitars play a lot of the fast and simple riffs that grindcore is famous for. They also play some mid-paced riffs that draw heavily from hardcore and thrash metal. These riffs are played extraordinarily well and have a really heavy sound to them. Again, it's not that original, but it's the performance that counts here.

In music, you have two choices. You can either do something that no one else has ever done before or you can take an existing formula and do it really well. These guys chose the latter. They make grindcore that brings to the table a complex drum performance, strong vocals, and crushing riffs. It's great, and not only that, but it's currently available as a name-your-price download on their official Bandcamp page, so you have no excuse not to get it.
