Doodsangst – Doodsangst

Doodsangst is a rather funny-sounding name. It's also the name of a black metal band from Belgium. I downloaded this months ago and I've yet to listen to it. I don't want to put it off any longer, so let's check it out.

It begins with some organs that sound rather cheesy, but the riffs that come after that make up for it. They have this tone that is full of sorrow yet full of beauty. I also like how much harmony they have. You don't see very many black metal bands that place an emphasis on harmony, do you?

After that, we dive into the bulk of the black metal. I'll start off by pointing out the most obvious problem: the drums don't sound very good. They feel way too mechanical, they're way too simple, and they're way too high in the mix. Other than that, this album's pretty nice. There are no vocals. Instead, the guitar is the real star of the show. They constantly switch between fast tremolo riffs and solemn mid-paced riffs that border on depressive black metal territory. They exude an atmosphere that is cold and has a strong feeling of misery. I also enjoy those parts where they play some post-rock clean guitars.

This demo might not be the best, but I absolutely love the guitar work. It's so dark and sad yet so beautiful. I especially loved the ambient parts which reminded me of all those alien sounds that were common in Earthbound. This demo is available as a free download on their Bandcamp page, so now's a great time to check them out.
