Mortuoria – Smell of Tombs

Mortuoria was a death/thrash band from Argentina that released four demo between 1994 and 2004 before splitting up. Out of these demos, I was only able to find Smell of Tombs. Compared to the other demos I've been listening to this week, this one isn't all that bad, but it's not all that good either.

My biggest problem lies with the drums. The cymbal crashes sound like a cluttered mess. I don't know whether that's due to bad production or faulty cymbals. The drums play lots of simple blast beats as well as your standard thrash metal mid-paced rhythms. They sort of sound like Anthrax. Overall, the performance isn't anything special, but I can't get over the fact that the snare drum sounds like he's banging on a paint can lid.

The vocals consist of a growled shout that sounds like it's been buried deep in the mix. However, even if they were produced right, their performance does little for me. The member who seems to be putting in the most effort is the guitarist. Sure, the guitar tone mostly sounds like a fart and most of the riffs are unoriginal, but at least he's trying to put on an interesting performance. I like the clean guitars he plays at the beginning, the black metal riffs he plays on the third song, and he squealing chords he plays throughout.

Overall, it's much better than the other demos I've been listening to, but it doesn't really do enough to keep my interest. My biggest problems with this demo are the muffled production, the cluttered drums, the weak vocals, and an atmosphere that just feels really boring.
