I was originally going to post an interview with Delete The Mass for Halloween, but it seems they're busy with touring and whatnot and haven't gotten back to me, so instead, I'm going to talk about one of my favorite channels on YouTube: Vinesauce.
What is Vinesauce? Well, from what I can understand, it's this group of gamers who stream gameplay footage and provide some funny commentary. They're all great, but the man that got me interested in Vinesauce in the first place was Vinny. He's a New Yorker who is most well-known for his corruption series, where he uses a special program to alter random bits in the games code. The results are equal parts hilarious and horrifying. You'll find my favorite moments after the jump.
This was the video that introduced me to Vinesauce. For this one, he didn't use his corruption program. Instead, he used a bunch of Gameshark codes. It starts off hilarious. The ground textures are randomly swapped, creating an odd mishmash of colors that looks like a bad acid trip. Mario has stars for arms and his foot grows to massive proportions. But then things get creepy. I don't want to spoil it for you, so you'll have to watch the video and find out for yourself.
Here are some more great corruptions, but the reason why I love this video so much is because it shows off Vinny's voice acting talent, which begins at 3:34. His performance was so outstandingly funny, it got its own animation courtesy of Angelo Furfaro (formerly known as TRMario).
If you ask me, this is easily the funniest corruption video Vinny's ever done, featuring music that launches itself into the stars, a title screen that looks like someone ate it and puked it out, and a spinning, flapping, magic piece of wood. I completely lost it at the 36 second mark. All of this can best be summed up by what Vinny says near the end: "I'm going to piss myself to sleep tonight.
One day, Vinny decided to do corrupt Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. Everything was going fine until something unexpected happened. He encountered a dark and mysterious entity named Sen. It all goes downhill from there. This video feels like a creepypasta except, you know, actually creepy.
If you'd like to awaken the elder gods with me, press one of these buttons! But seriously, this is the scariest corruption video Vinny has ever produced. All of the characters sound like they're drowning in a sea of nightmares, and their bodies twist and distort into grotesque, unrecognizable forms. The scene where Grover slowly recedes into the wall is one of the most terrifying things I have ever witnessed. What makes this video truly frightening is how Elmo seems completely unaffected by all the corruption that is going on around him. Never before have I felt so much concern for a fictional character.
Conker's Bad Fur Day: Exorcism Edition.
This was the latest corruption Vinny has done. Before this, I had no idea you could corrupt ISOs. I thought you could only corrupt ROMs, but sure enough, Vinny found a way to corrupt Metal Gear Solid. Snake twitches his limbs about like an unholy contortionist, the colors change randomly like a psychedelic nightmare, and all the characters sound like they're trying to communicate through a haunted ham radio.
That's Vinesauce for ya. If you want to see more of their work, check out their YouTube channel. If you want to corrupt some games yourself, you can find a link to their rom corruptor here. Happy Halloween, everybody!
