I don't really know anything about Sri Lanka. All I know is that Genocide Shrines comes from there, and let me tell you that their music is awesome, just plain awesome.
Sure, the production might not be all that great and the drums might sound cheap, but they make up for it by crafting evil and destructive music. The guitar tone and prominent bass remind me of Exhumed, but the songwriting reminds me of war metal bands like Blasphemy. The drums dish out lots of unrelenting blast beats that give me the impression that there's an 8-armed god of war behind the kit. They also play some mid-paced rhythms that feature lots of cymbals that allow you to catch your breath before the assault on your senses begins again.
The vocals consist of a deep, bellowing growl that sounds like he's gurgling on the blood of his slain enemies. They're dark, they're malignant, and they're absolutely amazing. The guitars are even more amazing. As I said before, they take the crunchy, dirty tone of Exhumed and combine it with the destructive songwriting of Blasphemy. They play lots of fast riffs that eradicate the landscape, but they also play a few mid-paced riffs that give you time to reflect on the destruction that has been wrought. It's an unstoppable engine of aural destruction, I tell you what.
Genocide Shrines has so far released only one EP, and they're already one of my favorite new bands. They wield so much destructive power it's not even funny. Most metal bands in America and Europe can only wish to be this destructive. Devanation Monumentemples is an awesome release and you need to listen to it right away.
