Proteus – Proteus

Proteus was one of Russia's earliest death metal bands, and they also came from the little known island of Sakhalin. They formed back in 1991 and released their only demo a year later. Their guitarist then joined the military and the band broke up a year after that.

To put it lightly, just because you were one of the first it doesn't mean you were one of the best. The production was horribly managed. When the drums go into blast beat mode, they drown out everything else. You know the cliché about how drums sound like trash cans? On this demo, they really do sound like trash cans. After straining my ears a bit, I discovered that beyond the drums, there was only sub-par death metal. The guitars sound totally standard and there's no rhyme or reason to the growls. They just happen at random.

Proteus may have been one of Russia's first death metal bands, but that's not a measure of quality. Not by a long shot. Just skip over this one.
