Putamen Insula – Putamen Insula

I was drawn to this album by the cover. Three pigs in fancy suits having an extravagant feast. It reminds me of all those political cartoons from the nineteenth century. Let's hope the music is just as good.

Putamen Insula play blackened crust. This style is characterized by the fusion of black metal and crust punk which is then played with uncompromising ferocity. Putamen Insula seems rather reluctant to unleash the ferocity. Sure, the songs will start off hard-hitting and vigorous, but then they end up slowing down inexplicably. More competent songwriting would have fixed this nagging contradiction.

In terms of musicianship, they don't do much. Just the standard black/crust formula. The bass is chunky and high in the mix, the drums play some simple beats with some fills thrown in, the guitars play black metal riffs through a crust filter, and the vocals consist of high-pitched howls. There really isn't a lot of variety to their performance. Sometimes the production is nice and cloudy, but other times it seems really thin.

Putamen Insula showed some potential, but they should have taken more time to practice their craft. As it stands now, their debut album is only average. It's not good enough for me to get excited about and it's not bad enough for me to get angry about.
