Solar Miasma – Cataclysmic Starfire

There aren't a lot of black metal bands that talk about space. Fortunately, Solar Miasma is here to change that with their first release, Cataclysmic Starfire.

Unfortunately, the production doesn't help their cause. It's much too quiet, which means I have crank up my speakers to full blast in order to hear anything. Despite this, the music is pretty decent. The drums are vigorous in their delivery by offering up an unrelenting blast beat assault. (Although it would help if they had a better snare sound.) The guitars shred relentlessly, and there are certain times when they'll do some noodling and even a few guitar solos. There's a great deal of reverb placed on the vocals that make his rasps sound like the vengeful spirits of space.

The quiet production is the only thing that keeps me from recommending this album. I'm hoping they'll be able to rectify this problem in the future, because these guys make some pretty good black metal.
