Disinterred – Demo MMXIII

Disinterred is a new contender in the long line of old school death metal worship bands that have swept the underground as of late. They released their first demo just this year. Will it kick ass or will it be a bore? Let's find out.

The first thing that caught my attention was the extremely thick, borderline radioactive guitar tone. It's as filthy as life during the dark ages, and I love it. These guys are from Belgium, yet the guitar tone makes them sound like they're from Sweden. The drums follow a hardcore punk aesthetic as they're stripped down and minimalistic, sticking to simple blasts and rhythms. They eschew flashy and extravagant drum work for something that gets straight to the point.

Not only does the guitar tone sound Swedish, the vocals sound Swedish as well. They're deep and rather hoarse, like an undead creature that haunts the peasants in their dreams. Of course, the best part of this whole affair is the guitar work. Like the drums, they're simple and get straight to the point. However, there is this one point on “No escape” where they play a pretty wild solo. Overall, these guitars are straightforward, thoughtfully crafted, and catchy as fuck.

Another thing I noticed about these guys is that even though they play great music, they still manage to have a sense of humor, namely in the audio clips they use. At the beginning of the first song and the end of the last song, they use clips from one of my favorite scenes from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, where Eric Idle is telling everyone to bring out their dead. Most obscure death metal bands use audio clips to make themselves look “scary” or “funny”, but they end up making themselves look stupid. (That means you, Mortician.) Disinterred, on the other hand, uses audio clips that are not only relevant to the music, but are also cleverly used. I wish more bands implemented these elements as intelligently as these guys do.

This demo is short, simple, and completely awesome. They not only worship the old school, they also make music that is both well thought out and infectious. The best part is that this demo is available as a free download on Bandcamp.
