ReverbNation Spotlight: Il'ya Gromov

I'm well aware that Russia has a pretty large metal scene, so I decided to search for Russian black metal on ReverbNation. Alas, I didn't find as many bands as I had hoped. However, one band in particular stood out and caught my attention with its beauty. That band is name Il'ya Gromov. It's actually just one guy from Moscow, but I have been captivated by what he's created.

His music can best be described as droning ambient black metal. There are no drums, bass, or even vocals. There exists only a guitar and lots of reverb and cloudy distortion. Despite the limited instrumentation, he has created music that is powerful and expansive. The slow, depressive riffs and the soft, cloudy distortion create what can best be described as the waves of a black metal ocean. Whereas most other black metal bands are violent and in your face, Il'ya Gromov has an appreciation for subtlety. He knows that there's more to black metal than just being evil. Black metal is also about those times when you just want to be left alone. Through his music, he creates a mesmerizing environment where you can ponder your deepest thoughts without interruption, where you can float freely and gaze upon all that life has to offer.

I love it. I love the minimalism. I love the atmosphere. I love his vision. Il'ya Gromov, if you're reading this, I love you. No homo.
