For this weeks ReverbNation Spotlight, I'm going to cover two technical death metal bands from Indonesia: Radang and Morphgenetik. I do this not only because they only have a couple songs up and I need to pad out this post, but also because they have similar-looking logos. They both remind me of Archspire's logo.
First up is Radang, and they sure sound as crazy as Archspire, what with their massive waves of weedly-weedly guitar work. As can be expected from Indonesia, the drums are utterly relentless, with constant blast beats and double bass. The vocals also sound like Archspire, as they consist of a deep, throaty rasp. Finally, the guitars are utterly impeccable, not only with mind-boggling weedly-weedly assaults, but also with more traditional guitar work, especially that solo at the halfway point. They also make sure to add a few slams. They're from Indonesia after all. They're contractually obligated to include a few slams.
The other band I want to talk about today is Morphgenetik. Their death metal is more traditional and is nowhere near as crazy as Radang, but I love it all the same. One of the first thing I noticed was that the vocals sounded quite similar to Siksakubur. I wish their performance would have been stronger, but they're still enjoyable. The drums unleash a great deal of blast beats and double bass, as well as plenty of fills to keep things interesting. Since their death metal is more traditional, their riffs are more sane and have more pinch harmonics and other traditional hallmarks. They still play some weedly-weedly on occasion. The most interesting thing I noticed was that there was a touch of melody in the guitar work, especially in the solo on "Sistem Biokot Zionis".
I enjoyed both bands' performances, but if I was forced to pick a favorite, it would have to be Morphgenetik. Radang seems to disorganized and chaotic for me, but then again, they're nowhere near as bad as Brain Drill in that regard. Radang and Morphgenetik are both great bands, but the latter seem to have a clearer musical vision.
