Treachery – Playing With Fire

There are a shitload of metal bands named Treachery. Most of them are from America and most of them happen to play thrash metal. This one in particular is a thrash metal band from Illinois. They formed sometime around the early 90s and released only one demo called Playing With Fire in 1993. When they realized there was no longer a market for thrash metal, they immediately broke up. As with so many other thrash metal bands during this time, Treachery was a victim of circumstance, but is their music any good? Let's find out.

Since there are only two songs on this demo, I'll try to pad out this review as much as possible. The production is pretty good for a demo. I can hear everything perfectly and nothing is muffled. The drums play your standard mid-paced rhythms, but they also make sure to throw in plenty of complex fills. Not only that, but the snare is quite prominent in the mix, thus showing that they took the time to produce this album right. As is the case in most other bands, the bass mainly sticks to following the guitars, but they do show up on occasion, such as on the second song.

The vocals sound like a more subdued Joey Belladonna. Personally, it felt like he lacked focus. It would have been better if he had put more effort into his performance. I like the gang vocals, though. They remind me of Anthrax. As usual, the best part of this performance are the guitars. They mainly play mid-paced riffs, but they have a nice bit of melody to them, especially on the first song. Most of the other rhythmic riffs are great too, albeit unoriginal. And of course, they make sure to throw in a few shredding solos. They even play some quite pleasing clean guitars at the beginning of the second song.

Overall, this was a pretty decent thrash metal demo. I just wish the vocals were more forceful and the demo wasn't so short. Seriously, only two songs to your name? Unfortunately, they won't be able to make anymore, but the stuff they've made is still good.
