Execration – Excreting Guts

There are many bands named Execration. This one in particular came from Glendale, Arizona. They formed in 1991 and released only two demos, Excreting Guts and Meat, before splitting up. I was able to find Excreting Guts, but I was unable to find Meat. Without further ado, let's listen.

The production isn't terrible. It maybe kinda muddy, but I can still hear everything just fine. The music, on the other hand, is just plain bland. The drums mainly play your standard mid-paced rhythms and blast beats. Sure, there are a few interesting moments where he does some great stuff with the double bass and the cymbals, but it's not enough to hold my attention. At least the bass is good. It's high in the mix and plays some rather punkish riffs.

The vocals are weak. They consist of this hoarse growl which gives me the impression that he's not putting enough effort into his performance. As for the guitars, they mainly play your run-of-the-mill death metal riffs that don't push the envelope or pull off any interesting tricks. They would rather play it safe. At least they play a few cool-sounding solos on occasion.

While the production is fine and there may be a few cool moments, Execration can't save themselves from sounding boring and derivative. If you're looking for exciting death metal, I'm afraid you won't find it here.
